Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah - is an American actress, rapper and acrobat. in film, music and on television, Queen Latifah is the recipient of the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nods and has been nominated for her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah grew up in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple split when Latifah, then ten years old. Latifah was a student at a Catholic school, and she was educated in Newark New Jersey. She attended the Baptist church. Latifah is a word that means gentle and kind. Her cousin gave it to her when she was eight years old. Being a tall girl, at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward for the basketball team at her high school. in a school show, she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah first began to beatbox for Ladies Fresh. Latifah is one of the founding participants of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded a demo of the rapper Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah after hearing the song. She released her first single Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
